Phase 1: The Backpack Base (Gray)

Phase 2: The Flap (Gray)

Sew the flap to the back of the backpack, in the second row from the top.

Phase 3: The Strap

Attach gray yarn to the back of the backpack, ch 90 and attach to the other side. Without cutting the yarn, work 90 sc back across the chain. Fasten off and weave in ends. Find the middle of the strap, create a loop, and sew it to the flap of the backpack.

Phase 4: The Ears (2 pieces)

Round 1: (Starting with white yarn) 15 ch, sc in 2nd ch from hook, 4 sc, 2 hdc, 3 dc, 2 hdc, 3 sc, 2 sc in other side, 2 hdc, 3 dc, 2 hdc, 4 sc (27) Change yarn to gray, weave in remaining yarn ends while crocheting sc around: Round 2: 13 sc, inc, 13 sc (28) Fasten off leaving a long tail. Sew the ears to the flap of the backpack.

Phase 5: The Pom-Pom (White)

Wrap yarn around a fork 30 times, cut the yarn, tie around the middle with another piece of yarn, tighten as much as possible and tie a knot. Remove the pom-pom from the fork, cut the loops on both sides and trim with scissors to form a ball. Sew the pom-pom to the front of the backpack.
